Before SEO: logistics research

I did not come to search engine optimisation through marketing but through logistics. From December 2014 to September 2017 I was a project manager at the Institute for Distribution and Retail Logistics of VVL e. V. in Dortmund, and had worked there as a student assistant for several years before that.

My research topics: waiting times for lorries at loading docks, packaging produced by 3D printing, and projects on the disposal of electronic waste and waste glass. Alongside that, project management with my own budget responsibility.

The centre of that work was HaWana, a federally funded research project, in full “Standardisierung und Regulierung der Handhabung von Wartezeiten bei der Be- und Entladung von Lkw im gewerblichen Güternahverkehr”. I led the project. We surveyed freight forwarders, logistics providers, retailers and industry, and analysed loading dock processes on site.

The goal was explicitly practical: a set of guidelines helping small and medium-sized businesses reduce their waiting times and enforce demurrage claims. The same audience I make websites discoverable for today.

I presented the findings on 8 March 2016 at LogiMAT in Stuttgart, in the packaging logistics forum chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Jansen, and at the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

Further stations from that period: my thesis at Dr. Brüning Engineering, an internship at Schäflein Logistics GmbH in Schwerte and an internship at ThyssenKrupp Steel AG, Division Auto.

Why this belongs here and not in an archive: Anyone who spends years measuring how long a lorry stands at a dock, and why, afterwards thinks in throughput, bottlenecks and defensible numbers. That is exactly the way of thinking technical SEO requires. The subject changed, the method did not.

Six publications from that time at the institute, mostly on loading docks and packaging. All of them appeared in German trade press.
